Dear Friends:
This is an invitation to join us for an end of summer recital of art songs at Trinity Church in Swarthmore on Sunday, September 8, 2019 at 5:00 PM. The program, entitled "Nightscapes" is a poetic and musical exploration of night, sleep and dreams. Participating artists are Colin Doyle, tenor; Tracy Sturgis, soprano; Matthew Maisano, baritone; Janet Klik, mezzo-soprano, and James Smith, pianist. The principal work on the program is Robert Schumann's Dichterliebe, arguably one of the most important works of the romantic period, notable for its structural cohesion and intensity of expression. The cycle of poems by Heinrich Heine relates a poet's love, the loss of that love and his recovery from and assimilation of the loss. Each song is a perfect miniature while at the same time an element in the larger scheme of the cycle. The musicians will also perform a group of six songs by Richard Strauss as well as songs by Faure, Schubert, Barber,Liszt, Bachelet and Brahms exploring the world of sleep and dreams. We would be flattered by your presence with us that afternoon for a program of music that we are all anxious to sing. Best wishes for the end of the summer. James Smith, Trinity Music Director |
